Emotional Check Engine lights...
You eat the bread with butter, followed by a few picks of your husbands pasta, followed by dessert (all of which you promised yourself you wouldn't have AND even though you ordered "correctly" and got the fish).
That last bite is barely down before you are flooded with shame.
Or maybe you eat yourself to sleep and your eyes are barely open the next day before the guilt washes over you.
Girl, I have soooo been there and gotten this t-shirt, too many times to count.
Here is the first step in getting past these horrible (yet normal!) feelings....
Shame, guilt, regret can actually HELP you. When they arise, welcome them in. They have a message for you. (literally say to them - "hey sunshine, I see you, come on in!")
Treat shame or guilt as your check engine light inviting you to love yourself for the human that you are + inviting you to LOOK UNDER THE HOOD.
These feelings are just saying, "HEY, it is time to love ourselves, we made a choice that wasn't aligned with what we really want, we made a mistake, but WE as a human are not a mistake. We are awesome."
These feelings are asking you to take yourself into Jiffy Lube.
These feelings are asking you to look at your choice with loving eyes to see what went on there and how to not make that mistake next time. This is the only way we can change course and drive in the direction we want to.
Food can only get in your mouth by you thinking a thought. The good news? You get to choose which thoughts you believe and entertain.
You taking you to jiffy lube and looking under the hood, literally looks like:
"Hey, Self, what was I thinking when I put the pasta in my mouth? What will I think next time?" (actually answer this!)
When you look under the hood with love, you will be SO MUCH better equipped to handle the road bumps (aka that dang chocolate souffle) that will inevitably arise
Losing weight for the last time is a SKILL. This skill requires love, evaluation + practice. These feelings are your way to remember to do just that.
Thank god for feelings or we would just keep going to the wrong side of the tracks...
Have the Best Day Ever,
Laura
